BILLIONAIRE media mogul Kerry Packer once tipped his attractive young caddie $75,000 after a day of golf — which she used to buy a house.
The woman, identifying herself as Narelle from Alexandria in Sydney, made the claim on Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa on Monday morning, during a segment inviting listeners to tell their “amazing” story for a chance to win Ariana Grande tickets.
“When I was 20 years old I was Kerry Packer’s golf caddie for one day, and at the end of the day he tipped me $75,000,” she told the hosts. “I bought a house with the money.”
Narelle said she and three other girls were “basically glorified drink caddies”. “We just had to bring him a drink every time he was thirsty,” she said.

Asked whether she was “very attractive”, Narelle said “maybe back then”. “There was $300,000 split between four girls,” she said. “We were at the casino and he actually recommended to take a cheque from the casino so we didn’t have to pay tax on it.”
Narelle said it was a “very large night”. “We partied all night in his penthouse suite,” she said. “But he was a gentleman, he was really lovely.”
A spokesman for Nine Network was unable to verify the story.
But the iconic Aussie businessman, who died in 2005 at the age of 68, was well known for his largesse. In his book Kerry Packer: Tall Tales & True Stories, author Michael Stahl recounts how Mr Packer — a notorious gambler — was legendary for his tipping of casino staff.
“Packer’s tipping of casino staff became so well-known that, as one insider put it, ‘There was no-one sicker than a croupier genuinely taken sick when Packer was in town’,” Stahl writes.
“In the Las Vegas Review Journal in 2005, Mirage Resorts president Bobby Baldwin confirmed a well-known story, about an extremely generous tip given to a lucky cocktail waitress at the MGM Grand.
“He liked the service the girl was providing. He asked her if she had a mortgage. She said yes, and he said, ‘Bring it in tomorrow and I’ll pay it off for you.’ It was for $US150,000.
“A similar story told in Whale Hunting in the Desert: Secrets of a Las Vegas Superhost has Packer accidentally bumping a cocktail waitress, causing her to spill her drinks tray.
“Packer asked for her name and address and saw to it that her $US130,000 mortgage was immediately mopped up. And it seems Kerry Packer was as determined in his generosity as he was in everything else. Garry Linnell reported yet another mortgage-magic act in Vegas, where Packer pushed $US80,000 worth of chips towards a deserving croupier.”
Narelle’s anecdote about his tax advice also sounds plausible, given Mr Packer’s famous appearance at parliamentary inquiry in 1991. “I am not evading tax in any way, shape or form,” he told senators.
