This year’s market is expected to be highlighted by Bolt d’Oro, who came a disappointing third behind Good Magic and Solomini in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. As discussed and observed by many, Bolt d’Oro ran a poor tactical race where he was forced to the outside on the initial turn and never made his way back to the inside during the backstretch. He was caught wide again heading in to the homestretch and never stood a chance. Despite a hard rally, Good Magic held on to win by a commanding 4 1/2 lengths.

Because anything can happen from now until May, the odds in the 2018 Kentucky Derby Futures Wager – often shortened to “KDFW” – are a bit higher than usual. The opening favorite was Classic Empire in 2016, when he was the 3/1 preference in Pool 1. New entrants populate the list depending on the results of the Kentucky Derby prep races.

The final stretch of major races are the most important. The Florida Derby will go off first out of Gulfstream Park on March 31st. One week later the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass Stakes and Santa Anita Derby will all go off on April 7th. The only race that will take place after the final pool of the KDFW opens is the Arkansas Derby, slated for April 14th.
